Monday, June 18 The Hidden Journals Of Captain Vancouver and his Mapmaker

Our guest speakers will be Mary Tasi of Sky Spirit Studio and her studio partner Wade Baker, a descendant of three royal First Nations lineages, who have co-written The Hidden Journals: Captain Vancouver and his Mapmaker in an attempt to prove there was a marriage between the mapmaker on HMS Discovery, Lt. Joseph Baker-namesake for Mt. Baker-and the daughter of Chief Qeyupulenuxw in 1792-and also to substantiate Wade Baker's claim to be a descendant of Lt. Baker.

History turns into mystery when the authors start to research an ancestor from the 18th century - a mapmaker on Captain Vancouver's ship - Third Lieutenant Joseph Baker. The oral story from Coast Salish historical story keepers leads them to Maritime Museums around the world to find hidden documents, logbooks and maps, and a very different Captain Vancouver than the man described in mainstream history. The book also provides an alternative viewpoint as to why Captain Vancouver was discredited by the Lords of the Admiralty when he returned to England in 1795. In 2017, the authors were honoured to meet the British descendants of Lt. Baker's second wife from England.
